HEAR THE PAINTING, SEE THE SOUND WITH SOUNDSCAPES AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY
The National Gallery has commissioned several sound artists and musicians including man of the moment Jamie xx. He is joined by BAFTA award-winning Chris Watson, multi-media artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared, composer Nico Muhly and artist Susan Philipsz.
Each artist was asked to respond to a painting of their choice from the National Gallery's collection. Both the painting and it’s ‘soundscape’ were then installed in the artist's own soundproofed room in the exhibition space.
This experience teaches the viewer to engage with paintings in an entirely new way – to hear the music within the painting and to see the visual within the music.
We are excited hear the musical responses these sound artists have created. Not only will it change the way we see the painting, but also paint a picture of the artist's own journey towards their outcome.
