THE DON'T PANIC GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN LANGUAGE

Tired of not understanding those foreigners talking in strange tongues on the bus? Too lazy to attend a language course? Why not just make your own. Follow these simple steps and soon you will be able to cheat at exams and escape awkward blind-dates and, above all, say something nasty to someone without them being able to understand. Yay!

Sound
The most important thing is to decide which sound your language should have. It’s preferable to choose something that is different from anything else you’ve ever heard. Get inspired by animals, for example an anteater. The anteater sounds like someone who is exited and has trouble breathing.

Vocabulary
After getting used to the sound of your language it’s time to develop a vocabulary. Ambitious language-makers often make their own dictionary. This will however, take up too much time. Therefore, add something to a language you already know. Take a short word which begins with the same letter as it ends, for example, dad, mum, tit, blop, poop, bob, plimp, plamp or boob. Then add that word where all vowels are in a word of your mother tongue.
Like this: HELLO would be HE-poop-ELLO-poop-O or HE-mum-ELLO-mum-O. It’s important to double up all vowels in a word so that the language gets a nice flow like this: “hepoopellopoopo!”

Names
Now, when the sound is functioning and the flow is smooth, it’s good to add something for cities, countries and people that you often talk about. Take things that you associate with them, for example smelly for your smelly friend Tom and fit for your fit friend Fred. Tom would be SME-poop-ELLYand Tom would be FI-poop-IT (you don’t have to add your “magic word” to silent vowels). In this way no one could ever know that you are talking about Tom and Fred.

Writing
The easiest way to develop a handwritten alphabet to your new language is to use letters you already know and simplify them. Put them upside-down or on the side. Remove things that the letters don't need, for example the middle piece on an E. Also choose if you are going to write with only capital or small letters. Then just spell things in the same way as they sound.   Tadaa! You now know a perfectly good and useful language! Or: yopoopo nopoopow knopoopow apoopa pepooperfepoopectlypoopy goopoopod apoopand upoopusepoopefupoopul lapoopanguapoopage!
Good luck!
