What have you got planned for NYE, any sexy hotel fun on the agenda?
So far the plan is to go to legendary techno club Berghain in Berlin. They have some wonderfully permissive nights in the basement, which my partner & I like to attend.
How did you come up with the concept for your Don’t Panic video?
Well it’s a long story to be honest. The brief was to create something that was 1990’s themed and the original plan was to use Channel 4’s 1990’s show “the best of The Word” as material. It turned out that Channel 4 were not very keen on us using this and they removed the test videos that we uploaded almost immediately. This meant thinking of alternative material that was synonymous with the 1990’s. My idea was to use the 1991 Vanilla Ice film “Cool as Ice” as a starting point and incorporate other 90’s movies as I went. It then occurred to me to watch some of Beverly Hills 90210 as it is an extremely 1990’s show. I did not enjoy watching this show I can tell you! I can however thoroughly recommend the Vanilla Ice movie. It really is an absurdist classic.
Which Harrison Ford film is that? Please tell me it’s Regarding Henry?
It’s the great Roman Polanski’s film “Frantic”. This is actually a late 80’s film (The only non 90’s film I used) but I used it anyway because I knew that there were several examples of people saying the word “Hotel”
Do you pick a target and start searching through footage, or wait for inspiration to strike?
The first one you said. Pick a target and then start the unenviable task of sifting through it. It feels a bit like going to Mordor for your holidays.
Did any Nick Griffin fans get in touch following your Question Time mash up?
Yes we had a few unpleasant types commenting on the video. Especially on YouTube. You have to remember though that the people who comment on YouTube videos are with the exception of Catholics, the most moronic people on the planet.
You’ve produced two videos for Amnesty TV, how did it feel to be approached by them?
When they first asked us to do something I almost done a crap. Later on when the information had sunk in I began to feel a little more relaxed and at ease with the situation. Once I had slept on it I awoke with a fresh feeling of tenseness but throughout the day this feeling gradually gave way to a more resigned feeling of ambivalence. Seriously though, we are happy to help Amnesty.
Was it difficult to make the leap from the likes of The Hairy Bikers to the situation in the Middle East?
Generally it’s a lot easier to make something with news and political broadcasting than any other type of TV show. So in reality even though there were many more minutes of material to work with the Hairy Bikers, the Obama piece was more of a joy to make.
If you could collaborate with anybody on your next project, who would it be?
We are currently collaborating with lots of other mash up artists on something that will hopefully be finished next year. If I could collaborate with anybody though I would like it to be magician extraordinaire Paul Daniels and his lovely wife Debbie McGee. We had the pair of them round for dinner a few months back and I cooked a turkey casserole. We all enjoyed a few bottles of wine and overall I would give the evening 10 out of 10. They really are a lovely couple.
Who will Cassetteboy be VS in 2012?
When we chose someone to cut up it is generally either someone we love or someone we hate. With the latter in mind I would really like to cut up middle class TV chef Lorraine Pascal who I detest. You should expect to see some hard hitting filth at some point. Especially if they give her a second series.
Is Clarkson due another bashing?
I assume by this that you mean Top Gear presenter, Jeremy Clarkson?
Well Clarkson would perhaps surprisingly fall into the “people we love” category so we may do another piece on him. Cassetteboy honestly love Clarkson and Top Gear. I never used to like him but now I realise how wrong I was. Clarkson is a superb entertainer and I love him and May and the Hamster as well. Did anyone see the episode of Top Gear where they built their own motor homes and Clarkson was wearing one of those silly fuzzy woolly hats? Television doesn’t get much funnier than that...
Have you ever won an egg and spoon race?
I’m afraid that I have not ever won an egg and spoon race. My Father was a contracts manager for a well known British arms manufacturer.
Do you know the words to Candle in the Wind?
Oh the words to Candle in the wind. I would have liked to have known you but I only really knew the chorus and a few snippets of the verses. I could find them out for you though if you like. Anyway here is my name drop moment…..I am good friends with Arsenal goal machine Robin Van Persie and he is a big Elton John fan. I’ll ask him if he knows the words to Candle in the Wind.
Have you ever owned an Amstrad video machine?
No but I had several Panasonic machines that were very reliable.
Why not?
Because Panasonic ones were better.
See more from Cassetteboy on their Youtube channel. Their latest album, Carry on Breathing is out now, and would make a fine Christmas present.
