WHY FUGITIVES AND SOCIAL MEDIA DON'T MIX
WHY FUGITIVES AND SOCIAL MEDIA DON'T MIX
I think I'd find it kind of hard to be a criminal. Not because of the whole disregard for the law thing - I mean once when I was three I kind of stole a bottle of bleach from Woolworths. So I'm fully down with crime. The part I couldn't handle is not being able to tweet whenever the fuck I want. I mean I literally tweet constantly. Itchy leg? Tweet that shit. Sadly, however, it turns out that if you're a 60 year old fugitive from California it's probably best to give social media a miss. Wanda Lee Podgurski was recently convicted of disability and insurance fraud in her home state of San Diego. She managed to stack up a somewhat staggering 29 felonies after faking injuries and collecting payments from various insurance companies totaling $650,000.
After failing to appear at a recent hearing Podgurski fled the state - that's so fugitive! Although it was back in January the fraudster disappeared, she recently took to twitter to taunt 'catch me if you can'. I know, I know, there are probably criminals worldwide shaking their heads in disbelief thinking 'oh no you didn't!' But she did. Shortly thereafter a Computer and Technology Crime High-Tech Purpose team, or basically just the police, were able to trace her location, and she was arrested in Rosarito, Mexico. Authorities commented Podgurski travelled the world when she was supposedly disabled. She was later sentenced to 20 years in state prison. Don’t tweet and do crime.
