STREETWEAR AND TITS
STREETWEAR AND TITS

Tumblr now lays claim to all the titties in the land, especially if there’s a Supreme logo somewhere in shot. Blogs like dailymovement – which sounds like an espresso-induced event in your bowels – are utterly hypnotic. Whodathunkit? There seems to be something inherently fascinating about girls in beanies. Girls with skateboards. Girls with their nipslip obscured by a bag of weed. Girls with an Obey sticker slapped across one of their butt cheeks.

I’m not denying that these blogs hold a mystical attraction; I’ve often fallen victim to the reblogging wormhole. Kids on Crack, Women, Weed and What to Wear, Casual and Baskets represent only a fraction of my browser history - sometimes hours will pass before I attempt to escape the clunge and Carhartt cave. But there’s also something pretty disturbing about the trend. Most of these perfectly formed ladies appear in the midst of ill-focused snaps of footwear, money, drugs and endless streetwear brands. Branding women isn’t new. Selling clothes via nice boobs isn’t new either. But these blogs reveal a new approach to selling attire that I find pretty gross.

The problem lies in the fact that these companies, despite promoting themselves as menswear, are now secretly positioning themselves towards the girls. These campaign photos seem to be saying that if that cute sk8r boi you’ve always had a crush on is buying these brands, then why not turn yourself into the product they buy? The tits aren’t selling the clothes to men – the tits are telling girls that their mammaries are only worthy of a glance if they’re sponsored by Stussy. These images are so sinister because of how they are endlessly reblogged by women who should know better after spending the first twenty years of their lives realising that what Vogue says might not be correct. And now, invigorated by a misleading and misogynistic aesthetic, we’re getting so confused that we’re actually being convinced to make ourselves into products.

There has undoubtedly been a subtle change in the way we view advertising like this because of how Tumblr promotes a sense of pseudo-ownership over images as they’ve been sourced from a community rather than straight from the brand’s website. And this doesn’t impact a woman’s psyche so well. Suddenly these images of porn stars shot by Terry Richardson are coming straight from the guys, not a faceless company. Of course boys are going to blog pictures of bangin’ ladies wearing the Mens XL tee already hanging in their wardrobe. These models look like they borrowed the blogger's sneakers to walk home in after a night of rampant sexytimes. But guys don’t want this, no matter how much they’ll deny it. Because after all that fictional banging has been done, they don’t want to be told that their stuff is last season. It’s like girls who like football – the archetypal guy (sorry for being reductive here lads) doesn’t want a lady more knowledgeable than them.

So despite the fact that ladies have always been covered in brands, these Supreme pin-ups represent a definitive shift in the clobber girls are choosing because of the testosterone drenched web pages that they inhabit. Girls dressed like this don’t just warrant a guy to do a double take, it prompts them to ‘add to cart’. And being purchasable isn’t a good look.
Do you find these Tumblrs hot or a turn off?
