INVASION

Invasion [http://www.myspace.com/invasion] are a two women and one man metal band formed in 2007 after guitarist Marek kicked out a member of his former band as he noticed that the guy mostly had “cute, young, Japanese girls” as friends on Myspace.
Marek then put up an ad on Gumtree and found Zel, a drummer who shared Marek’s passion for Black Sabbath, early Metallica as well as hating over produced metal tunes.
With the help of Chan’s interesting vocals, Invasion are, according to themselves in between the metal and indie stalls, who often get misunderstood by both the mainstream, as well as the metal press.
However, the trio’s unique and simple approach to heavy metal is making them one of the most interesting bands to come out of Britain for quite some time.
Known for their mix of heavy riffs and nice vocals, as well as singer Chan’s outfit on stage (colourful pagan hoods), I caught up with them to talk about influences and Marek’s hate for skinny jeans.

You had another singer originally, how did you meet Chan?
Z: When our old singer left, Chan came to watch a show when we played instrumental and she was like, "I really like you guys, are you looking for a singer?" And we were like, "yeah, actually we are!" And she is just fucking amazing, so it was really great.
What are your main influences?
Z: Black Sabbath are a big one.
M: Metallica, early Metallica and anything that has got a good riff – heavy metal before 1990.
Did you have musical upbringings?
Z: Yeah, my dad was in bands and stuff, he was like "you don't want to play drums, you sit in the back and you have to carry so much gear around, play guitar, play guitar." And I was like, "no, I'm going to play drums." Then I kind of moved to London, met Marek and the rest is history. Marek is a good guitarist, he only plays with three strings, but he writes amazing riffs...
M: That's true, I write incredible riffs.
Marek, have you played guitar all your life?
M: Yeah, I've been playing the same thing since I was 17. I grew up with heavy metal through my older brother and I've always played Doom or thrush or stoner, the whole time.
How thick is your skin on your fingers?
M: Not that thick, I don't practice very much. I was a lot better when I was 18, and I’m not interested in technique, I'm only interested in song writing and riffs really... I'm sick of over produced, over technical metal, it's bullshit, who cares? Write a good song. Write a good riff. I don't even care if you could play it well, that’s my attitude.
What are you listening to at the moment?
M: There's some amazing stuff coming out from Sweden, this band called Ghost.
Z: There are also some bands that are playing here today that are amazing, Comanechi and Bo Ningen.
I'm Swedish, so I have to ask, have you ever played in Sweden?
M: Yeah, we played in Stockholm, at Debaser Slussen.
How was that?
Z: It was amazing!
M: It was good! The Swedes really understand metal, and the whole fantasy, paganism thing. The Swedes are fucking cool!

Thanks! What's your worst fashion crime?
Z: Where do I start? I don't really understand fashion so I tend to wear black quite a lot, so that's it. I'm wearing white today, cause this t-shirt was the only one I’ve got and it's a Cauldron shirt. We got it when we toured with them.
M: And I wear flares all the time. Exclusively. I guess that's my fashion crime... Not extreme flares, but seventies styled jeans. I can't wear fucking skinny jeans with roll-ups, I don't know what it is, but I literally feel violent when I see that.
Violent? How?
M: I hate it, I think: "fuck off, you mommy's boy, pussy who are rolling up your fucking skinny jeans!"
Z: Good that I'm wearing mine today then!
M: It's just on guys. I'm just sick of it! I'm like, "Be a real man and wear some fucking flares and get dirty…"
What are you working on at the moment?
Z: We're working on a new album at the moment and it's going really well! We got a few songs so it should come out hopefully, next year.
M: Yeah, in January.
Sounds good! Do you have any parting words of wisdom?
M: Listen to Black Sabbath!
Z: Listen to Black Sabbath and drop some acid while you're doing it!
M: Yeah! It's all about acid and Black Sabbath.
Thank you. I will do!
