TWITTER FOR BLACKBERRY

24 Wednesday 24th February 2010

Up until now Blackberry owners have been using apps such as TwitterBerry, TinyTwitter, and of course ÜberTwitter, to tweet on the move. But there’s a new kid in town, and he’s got some backing. I’m referring to the new official Twitter app for Blackberry released by the device’s maker Research In Motion. The software is being distributed by invite codes, and thanks to a friend of mine who sent me it, I’ve downloaded the software and been using it for the past few days.

You’ll be pleased to hear that my first impressions are good.

The homepage is well set out, with seven icons (homepage, @mentions, profile, direct messages, people search, topic search and trending topics) across the top and the update bar underneath them. When you reach the bottom of the page and continue scrolling it updates with more tweets without the user having to click anything. What I particularly like about the app is that it is integrated with other functions on your blackberry. For example, you can set it up so that you are notified of new tweets in the email message list, then when you see you have a new tweet you can click directly through to it without having to go into the downloads menu to open it. Another good feature is that any links you paste into the update bar are automatically shortened using bit.ly software. The profile page for the followers and followed gives you easy access to their information including locations shown by a map at the bottom of the profile page.

So the big question is does the official RIM Twitter app have the potential to dethrone the highly successful and widely used ÜberTwitter?

In a word, Yes.

It looks nicer, loads quicker and is more integrated with the software on your blackberry than ÜberTwitter. And I’m especially impressed with the link shortening facility.

The app will be available to general public later this year –so sign up here for updates.

PS – while I have your attention, go to my twitter page
